Huia - Travels of a flower

Travels of a flower

The pohutakawa flower fell from its tree
where it was stood on by a child
it was carried to a classroom by the child’s boot
there it lay
on the floor
until a gust of wind blew it out the window
on to the street
where it fell into a gutter
carried by the stream
to the sewer where it came out in the ocean
socked clean
it washed up on a sandy island
where one of the natives picked it up
and wore it in their hair
where it grew old
and fell out
there it died a happy flower
